Please write a post introducing yourself. Here are some questions you may address:
- What brought you to LaGuardia
- What is the most fascinating thing you’ve studied/learned about during your time in college?
- What are your hobbies and interests?
- And, since we will spend the class talking about music, what kinds of music do you listen to? How would you characterize your relationship to music?
If you can, please post a picture or some music relevant to what you write about.

I came to LaGuardia because of very specific technicalities that the CUNY system holds. Before I came to LaGuardia, I spent two years at SUNY at Purchase College, initially as a Theater and Performance major but by the beginning of the 2nd semester of freshman year, I switched to Political Science. I under performed academically and became a person I didn’t like. I made the change of coming back to NYC, hoping I get my act together. I came to LaGuardia after finding out that CUNY has a technicality with High School state exams, but technicality was no accident. Coming to LaGuardia was the best decision I’ve made academically as it provided me with second chance to prove myself. The faculty, from my experience, trumps every academic experience I’ve had at SUNY Purchase. The professors are very knowledgeable and love what they teach, for the most part. My interests are sports (soccer and basketball), bike riding and learning about weird, funky stuff about powerful organizations and families as well as learning about ancient and renaissance history. In regards to music, I am Colombian-American so I was inevitably raised by Colombia folklore, Cumbia, and most importantly, Salsa. I listen to almost everything; from Reggaetón to rap to Mozart. I see my relationship to music as interpersonal. I like the music I am familiar with. I like Spanish music because it is what I grew up with. I like rap because of my relationship to the streets of NYC and with the people I grew up with. And classical music is different because it is the only kind of harmonious music that does not give me anxiety. This is me 🙂
Hello Anthony, what kind of futbol team do you support? I am a Barca fan. Also, I am glad to see you find yourself! From here on out, make sure to live the life you can be proud of!
Uyyyyyy no papa, I’m a Madrid fan, been a merengue since I was 5. I also appreciate the kind words man.
Hi Anthony, welcome to the class! You have very diverse musical tastes. That’s great! That should deepen your experience of the reading.
I share a similar but not very similar experience lol I attended college 10 years ago but did horribly, mostly due to myself and some family issues. But I decided to give it another go and my experience here at laguardia has been better than I expected. good luck to the both of us and I wish you a successful college career!
I decided to attend LaGuardia Community College for two main reasons: it was affordable and it was near my neighborhood. I’ve truly enjoyed my experience at LaGuardia and love that it has motivated me to continue with my academic career. This is my last class (finally graduated!) before transferring to Columbia University this Fall. Some of my hobbies are going on walks and reading. I love diving into a good book and zoning out for hours. As far as music, I like to think that my taste is very versatile. It really depends on my mood and how I want to feel in that moment. I have all types of music on my playlists. It can vary from salsa, rap, reggaeton, house, lo-fi, techno etc. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t listen to music, it is definitely vital to my life.
Congratulations on graduating ! That is amazing. I have to take this class and two more classes in Fall then I finally finish! Also I completely relate to you because there is not a day that goes by that I am not listening to music its a big part of my life.
What brought me to LaGuardia was doing the early college program that my high school offered. I started taking college classes at 15 while also taking high school classes. I am actually 18 years old now and I am graduating high school tomorrow (June 22). I am just finishing up the last few classes I have now for college. I am taking this class now and two more classes in fall then I am finished. Being a Liberal Arts: Social Sciences and Humanities major I have learned a lot through all the classes I took. It gave me a chance to see the different types of things that I might want to consider studying in the future. Some of my hobbies are singing, writing, and playing basketball. Something that interests me especially for my future is Law. I want to become part of Law Enforcement. This has been my interest since I was 14 years old and I joined the NYPD explorers at age 15 and I am currently still an NYPD explorer. I love music so much I listen to a lot of different genres like: country music, alternative rock, R&B, pop, blues, Soul. I love all different types of music . My relationship with music is very big. I used to play the French Horn when I was younger and I play the Piano. I haven’t played my piano in a little while but I am going to start playing again. I also love to sing . I always had a dream of becoming a singer. I can say there is not a day in my life where I do not listen to music.
Congrats on graduating! I wish I could’ve been as focused as you are at your age. As much as I love music I never got to learn any instruments so that’s really awesome that you can play the piano.
I originally came to LaGuardia because of the location and the campus set up. I enjoyed it being one huge square of different buildings and it made me feel less anxious about getting to my classes on time. The location made me feel like I was away from home since it is a 40 minute commute from Bushwick where I was born and raised. The most fascinating class I took was a technical writing course, because I learned so much from the professor. It wasn’t only the amazing portfolio that I built throughout the semester, it was also all of the life lessons and responsibility that I took with me AFTER completing the course.
I love to play video games, go on long walks, and play with my two beautiful dogs. I also love to go out dancing on the weekends or the weeknights 🙂 I love to socialize and make people drinks at work. I am also a DJ, my alias is Lokono and I do have a Soundcloud up if you want to check my mix out. I am very excited for my upcoming pride gigs. I eat, live, and sleep with music. I love all types of music, but my favorites are Hip-Hop, Garage House, Electronic, Reggae, and Techno. There are many more as well. I also listen to classical artist like Marion Anderson and Kathleen Battle. I love soulful singers at home like Nina Simone, Arethra, or Whitney. I also love my Latina Woman like Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, and Ivy Queen. Looking forward to having a great semester with everyone.
Whoa a Dj, that’s pretty cool to hear! You must be having a blast and I wish to have a personality like yours, I tend to be conservative person
Hi Richard!
I think its so cool that you’re a Dj, how did you get into it? I totally understand how you feel about the building lol, it saves me a lot of stress from being late. I find the walks from one building to another as a little workout.
Nice to meet you, Richard! Great to have a DJ in the class. You should have some good ideas for additions to our playlist
Let me start by saying I am a strong woman, a wife, a mother of 2 beautiful girls (16 and 2 years old) and a healthcare worker. I started at LaGuardia community college to pursue a nursing career. This is my last semester; I will be transferring to York to obtain my BS in Nursing this fall. I love dancing and I love music of all types but my heart leaps when I hear music from my home land (Soca & Calypso). I was born in Trinidad and migrated to the USA at the age of 12. When I hear a soca or calypso song it always takes me back to memories with family and friends.
I love living in New York the diverse culture is electric. Living amongst all the different cultures and learning about their food music and way of life makes everyday a learning experience (as it should be). This is what lead me to take this class. Music is the rhythm to life. A song can have such an impact on your life in so many ways I can’t wait to see what’s in store in LIB200.
Hi. I am glad to read about you. I was also born out of the USA, I came here in 2014 from Nepal. It is so good to see all the people from around the world living together here. I have learnt so much from my friends who have come from different parts of the world. The thing I also like is getting to try food from anywhere in a short distance walk. It is so amazing about NYC.
Hi Marissa, nice to meet you. Congrats on finishing at LaGuardia! The world needs more nurses!
Thanks 🙂
Hi.
I am Bharat Timalsina. I am a dad of a 4 years old daughter and currently I am a Uber Driver.
I had taken a break from studies since few years because of family issues. Then eventually I made up a mind of pursuing nursing career then I started looking for colleges. LaGuardia Community College was near, affordable and one of the best community college is New York so I got admitted here. To be very honest it is very complicated for me to understand music. I see people getting along with music and songs but I could never do that. Hopefully this class will help me understand music better since we will be discussing more about it. I am from Nepal so I listen to Nepali music. The Nepali instrumentals are what I like because they are soothing but I do also enjoy other types of music.
Hi Bharat, welcome to the class! I hope you will have the chance to write about the music of Nepal in your work for the class.
hey! I share similar experience with you. the first time i attended college I didn’t do very well at all due to stress from family, so i went out to work, including a few months of Uber! I had to go through all that process, only to stop after a few months because i was renting the car, and also i drove so much that my back started to develop a sharp pain whenever i sit for too long. But i also decided to give it another go and i appreciate everything laguardia has to offer. good luck to you in everything you wish to do!
Hi. Glad to read about you. I wish you the best too !!!
Hi Bharat , Im glad you decided to become a nurse. Please don’t stop pursuing your nursing career. Its not easy but its worth it at the end. I hope you find your love for music.
Hello Class,
My name is Annette Gonzalez.
Since 2016 I’ve been on a path towards understanding my Latina culture. While having the memories of my lived experience, I began to question Latina labor in the United States. That sent me down a rabbit hole leading me to develop relationships with several Latina entrepreneurs. I realized innovative businesses were underfunded; in search of a way to resolve the issue, I found myself at LaGuardia Community College. studying Business I quickly learned to effectively make the impact I want I have to be in politics.
Liberal Arts Social Science and Humanities has given me the flexibility to learn about various topics from NYC politics, Caribbean culture, and Psychology to name a few. I have never been politically active nor consider politics as a career option yet Fordham University will be gaining me as a student in their Urban Studies program next spring. New York City politics has been the most proflient course I’ve taken so far, the professor made it engaging by bring on a guest speaker every two weeks to cover a new topic of the book; for example our last speaker was City Council candidate Jennifer Gutierrez who spoke on the importance of political actors roles in the city and the budget. I’d recommend everyone take NYC politics especially to learn how the city we live in functions.
Music has always played a significant role in my life. My father was a DJ in the South Bronx during the rise of hip-hop. As a child I’d dance to the his mixes as they echoed around the house he played a lot of 80s freestyle. I’d dance with my mom to all the salsa legends on Saturday cleaning day and as we sat in BQE traffic. Today I still listen to salsa and freestyle, hip-hop, regagge, pop, lowfi and binary beats for study, a channel on Spotify called tulum vibes (I like to pretend I’m on a beach when I’m stuck in the city). my mood is synced to music. some days I listen to music to match my mood or I search for music to shift my mood.
My daughter has been teaching herself piano at home, lauren Hill is her favorite to play.
I’m looking forward to learning about the connection between music and everyone life.
Hi Annette, welcome to the class! It’s interesting that you have found your calling in NYC politics, which is a very interesting subject. And, it’s not unconnected to music. For instance, there are many connections between hip hop artists and local NYC political power.
Hey everyone!
My name is Sandra Gavilan, I am a graduate of Middle College High School. What brought me to LaGuardia is a program my high school offers which gives us high school students an opportunity to take college classes. I am currently majoring in Liberal Arts: Social Science and Humanities and after I receive my associates I want to go on studying Psychology. Being an early college student I learned a lot of things, understanding what the world has to offer and see what people are passionate about. As well as many skills from organization, time management and so much more.
When I’m not doing school work, I love to explore. Living in New York has its ups and downs but we should all agree how much culture and vibrancy it has to offer. Growing up in Queens I had many friends from different backgrounds and I love to learn about where they came from! I also love to bake with my sisters because it gives us a time to get creative and enjoy it.
I love music, I don’t know what I would do without it. Growing up in a Mexican household I would always hear my parents play their music and I grew to love it. In my playlist you would see artists such as Michael Jackson, Kali Uchis, Panic at the Disco, Black Eyed Peas, Los Angeles Azules and so much more! My relationship with music is very close, I just love how much music is out there and can bring so much emotion.
Hi Sandra, welcome to the class! Are the artists in your playlist the same as the ones your parents listen to, or do they listen to music from Mexico?
.
Hello, my name is Andrea Garner. Before attending LaGuardia, I attended Hostos for a year to study digital music. I transferred to LaGuardia so I could take Japanese language classes, as I am interested in possibly moving to Japan to teach English one day. I changed my major a couple times before choosing to major in Liberal Arts: Social Science and Humanities. This is my final semester. The most interesting course I’ve taken is Modern Japanese History. In the fall, I am transferring to Hunter College to major in studio art with a concentration in new genres. I want to create installation, performance, video/film and sound art. I started producing music ten years ago and always thought I wanted to be a music producer, but I learned that the music industry isn’t for me. Recently, I realized that I can still pursue my passion for creating music and sound through an alternative art form while also incorporating visual art. This is my dream as an artist, and I’m so excited I can study this at Hunter very soon. Music is a huge part of my life. It is very therapeutic and has helped me get through many difficult times. I enjoy a wide range of music genres including classic rock, alt rock, metal, ethereal, r&b, and K-pop. Recently, I’ve been listening to lo-fi music when I want to relax or study.
Hi Andrea, great to meet you! I’m happy to see music is such a big part of your life, and i think pursuing this interest through studio art is such a cool thing to do. As I’m sure you know, Hunter has a great studio art program.

Hello everyone,
My name is Wiktoria Suszek and this is my last semester in LaGuardia CC. What brought me here is a topic for a longer conversation because there were many things that attracted my eye when I was deciding to go to our school. But one of the most important factors were for sure many recommendations from people that already went there. Although I changed my major once, now I know exactly what I want to do in life and I feel like Laguardia has helped me with realizing it.
I think that one of the most fascinating things that I have learned in college is how to apply different formulas and my knowledge in math to solve complex problems. It is so fascinating how with using different tools and putting a good amount of effort we are capable of doing what once looked impossible to solve.
I have multiple hobbies and interests but one of the things that interest me the most is surely sports. I have always been an active person since I can remember. Starting with playing tennis at a very young age I went through many many other sports including handball, soccer, volleyball and table tennis. I am a huge fan of any sort of physical activity because it has always been making me happy. Another interest of mine is playing on my guitar. I started playing on it many years ago and the beggining was very frustrating but once I learned how to play my first song on it I became addicted to it and never went longer than a week without playing on it.
My relationship with music is not complicated at al. I think that everyone that knows me, knows that music plays a huge role in my life and I am obsessed with it. I listen to music when I wake up, when I am on my way to work, sometimes when I get lucky I do it at work too and after that when im falling asleep I like to put something on too. That pretty much sums up my relationship with it. It is my life. I don’t function without it. It simply helps me go through life, it helps me with expressing my emotions and what I love about it so much is that it can bring to me old memories in a matter of seconds. You will play me a song from 2016 and I will tell you when exactly I listened to it the first time and how the person I was hanging out with att that moment smelled like. It is crazy how it works in my mind. One of my favorite genres is definitely indie pop simply because I love how most of the songs have real meaning to them and actually talk about true emotions, or even when some songs do not have that many words, the melody does all the work and I still feel like it perfectly matches my energy. I also like rap and electronic music.
